Siding does not need high pressure, it needs the right solution and patience. We use a low pressure soft wash to take mold, mildew, algae and dirt off vinyl, brick, stucco and wood without damaging paint, caulking or trim, and without driving water in behind the panels. Eaves, soffits and fascia get cleaned with it, not around it.
Frankfort is built around the Kentucky River, and the historic core sits on both banks. Three historic districts cover that core, and the buildings in them run to nineteenth century brick and stone, with the Old State Capitol of 1837 and the 1887 courthouse still standing among them. That is an unusual amount of old masonry sitting in a river valley, and river valleys hold damp.

Historic masonry sets the ceiling on pressure. Old brick, stone and lime mortar around the historic districts are soft washed, never blasted, because high pressure on aged mortar takes the joint out along with the growth.

Only at low pressure. Aged brick and lime mortar in the Central Frankfort and Old Statehouse districts will lose mortar out of the joints under a pressure washer. A soft wash lifts the growth and leaves the joint alone.
Frankfort sits low and the valley holds moisture and morning fog longer than open ground does. Damp plus shade is what algae and mildew need, and porous old masonry holds that damp better than modern siding.
Not the way we do it. Roofs and siding get a soft wash: low pressure plus a cleaning solution that kills algae and mildew at the root, instead of high pressure that strips shingle granules and forces water behind siding. High pressure is for flatwork like driveways and sidewalks, not for the parts of your house that were never built to take it.
Never on the roof. High pressure strips the protective granules off asphalt shingles, and they do not grow back. Consumer Reports publishes 1,500 to 3,000 PSI as the range for concrete, and a shingle is nothing like concrete. The same goes for painted wood, old mortar and stucco, which lift or erode under force. Those surfaces get a soft wash instead: low pressure plus a cleaning solution.
