It feeds on airborne ethanol rather than on the surface it sits on, it grows as a velvety black crust up to a centimetre or two thick, and it comes back as long as the warehouses are aging. It is not the black mold people worry about indoors and it is not a health hazard, but it will not weather off on its own.
Two things drive the method here. Whiskey fungus needs a cleaning solution rather than brute pressure, because pressure alone drives it into the surface. And the historic brick around the downtown district cannot take high pressure at all, so anything near Federal Hill or the courthouse square is soft washed.
