What Bardstown does to gutters

Those dark vertical stripes down the front of your gutters are not dirt running out of them. They are airborne residue and organic growth, held to the outer face by an electrostatic bond that will not rinse off. Brightening them is a soft wash job on the gutter exterior, and it is usually the single most visible thing on a house after the roof.

Why Bardstown is different

Bardstown has a cleaning problem almost nowhere else has. It is the Bourbon Capital of the World, with Heaven Hill and Barton aging whiskey in town, and the ethanol vapor coming off those warehouses feeds Baudoinia compniacensis, the black whiskey fungus. It can spread around a mile and a half from an aging warehouse and it coats siding, fences, concrete, outdoor furniture and trees in a black crust. Layer that over the Bardstown Historic District, where the downtown brick is on the National Register, and you have surfaces that are both filthy and delicate.

What drives it in Bardstown

Whiskey fungus is not ordinary mildew. It feeds on airborne ethanol rather than on the surface it sits on, it grows as a velvety black crust up to a centimeter or two thick, and it comes back as long as the warehouses are aging. It is not the black mold people worry about indoors, but it will not weather off on its own.

The job

What gutter cleaning includes

What is included

Takes off the black striping that a rinse will not touch
Soft wash on the gutter exterior, matched to the finish
Pairs with a house wash, since the stripes show most against clean siding

Not included: debris removal from inside the gutter, downspout flushing, gutter inspection, gutter guard or gutter installation, repair or replacement.

How we work in Bardstown

Two things drive the method here. Whiskey fungus needs a cleaning solution rather than brute pressure, because pressure alone drives it into the surface. And the historic brick around the downtown district cannot take high pressure at all, so anything near Federal Hill or the courthouse square is soft washed.

Before you book in Bardstown

What is the black film on my house near the distillery?

It is almost certainly whiskey fungus, Baudoinia compniacensis. It feeds on the ethanol vapor that comes off bourbon aging warehouses, it can carry around a mile and a half, and it settles on siding, fences, concrete, furniture and trees as a black crust. It is not the black mold people worry about indoors, but it does not wash off with rain.

Will it come back after you clean it?

Eventually, yes, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. As long as whiskey is aging nearby the vapor keeps feeding it. Cleaning removes what is there and buys you a long stretch of clean, but properties close to the warehouses are a maintenance wash rather than a one time job.

What areas do you serve?

Louisville and the surrounding communities out to about 80 miles, including Prospect, Anchorage, Mount Washington, Shepherdsville, Taylorsville, Shelbyville, Bardstown, Elizabethtown, Frankfort and Lexington. Lexington is the furthest, at 78 miles, and gets booked as its own trip.
