Black Streaks on Your Roof in Louisville: What They Are

The dark streaks running down Louisville roofs are not dirt and they are not weathering. They are a living organism eating part of your shingle, and pressure washing them off makes it worse.

Drive through the Highlands or Crescent Hill on a bright day and look up. You will see roofs where one slope is clean and the slope beside it is streaked black from ridge to gutter. Same house, same age, same shingles, completely different appearance.

That is not dirt. It is not soot from the road, it is not weathering, and it is not a sign that the roof is worn out. It is a living organism, it is eating part of your shingle, and the most common way homeowners try to remove it is the one thing guaranteed to shorten the life of the roof.

The streaks are algae, and they are feeding

The organism is a blue green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It travels by air, lands on a roof, and settles in wherever the surface stays damp long enough for it to establish.

What it eats is the part most people do not know is there. Asphalt shingles are not pure asphalt. Manufacturers add limestone filler as a bulking agent, and that filler is calcium carbonate. Gloeocapsa magma feeds on it. So the algae is not sitting on top of your roof the way dust sits on a windowsill. It is anchored into the shingle, drawing on the material the shingle is made of.

That distinction matters for one practical reason: you cannot rinse away something with roots.

The dark color is the algae’s own defense. It produces a pigmented sheath to protect itself from ultraviolet light, and that sheath is what you see from the street. The streaking runs downward because rain carries the growth down the slope, which is why the pattern always looks like something has bled from the ridge.

Why one side of your roof and not the other

Almost every streaked roof in Louisville is streaked worse on the north facing slope, and the reason is simple: that slope gets the least direct sun and takes the longest to dry.

Algae needs moisture. A south facing slope bakes dry within an hour or two of a rain shower. A north facing slope in shade can stay damp most of the morning, and in the middle of a humid Kentucky summer it may never fully dry between showers. Sustained damp is the whole requirement.

This is why the problem is so uneven street to street around here. The Highlands runs along a ridge between the middle and south forks of Beargrass Creek, with mature canopy over a lot of it. Crescent Hill and Indian Hills carry heavy tree cover too. Anchorage, a few miles east, sits in wooded hills and valleys under a canopy of oaks and magnolias, which is why roofs there hold not just algae but moss.

Compare that to a newer subdivision on an open hillside in Mount Washington. Same climate, same airborne spores, far less shade, and the roofs stay noticeably cleaner for longer.

If your roof is streaked and your neighbor’s is not, the difference is usually a tree.

Does it actually damage the roof

This is where honest answers get thin, because there is a real effect and there is also a lot of exaggeration in this industry.

What is genuinely true:

It holds moisture against the shingle. The algae mat stays damp longer than a bare shingle would, and sustained moisture is not good for any roofing material.

It changes how the roof handles heat. A dark streaked roof absorbs more solar radiation than the same roof clean. On a west facing slope in August that is a real difference in attic temperature.

Moss is a separate and worse problem. Where tree cover is heavy enough for moss, not just algae, the moss holds standing water and its root structure works between shingles and lifts edges. That is a genuine mechanical problem, and it is common on shaded Anchorage and Prospect roofs.

What we will not tell you is that algae is destroying your roof this season or that it voids your warranty. It is a slow effect and a cosmetic problem long before it is a structural one. Anyone giving you a countdown clock is selling.

The strongest honest argument for cleaning it is the one people actually care about: it makes a sound roof look failed. A ten year old roof covered in black streaking reads to a buyer, an appraiser, or a neighbor as a roof at the end of its life. Cleaning it does not add life. It stops the roof from being judged as something it is not.

The mistake: pressure washing a roof

Here is where most of the damage in this industry gets done, and it is almost always done by a homeowner with a rented machine or a contractor who should know better.

A pressure washer will remove the streaking. It will also remove the granules.

Those granules are the roof’s surface layer. They shield the asphalt underneath from ultraviolet light and they are a substantial part of why a shingle lasts decades instead of years. Once they are stripped, the asphalt is exposed, and that part of the roof ages faster than the rest permanently. You cannot put them back.

Consumer Reports is direct about this: do not pressure wash a roof. Their guidance puts 1,500 to 3,000 PSI as the appropriate range for concrete, which is a hard, mineral, replaceable surface. A roof is none of those things.

The other half of the problem is that high pressure only removes what is visible. It knocks the top off the growth and leaves the anchored portion behind, which is why pressure washed roofs often look streaked again within a season. You paid granules for a few months of appearance.

What actually works: soft washing

Soft washing solves the problem the other way around. Instead of using force to knock growth off, it uses a cleaning solution to kill the organism where it sits, at low pressure, and then rinses.

The practical differences:

Nothing is blasted. Pressure stays low enough that granules stay bonded to the shingle.

The growth is killed, not knocked off. Because the organism dies rather than being partially removed, regrowth takes far longer. This is the difference between a roof that streaks again next spring and one that stays clean for years.

Foot traffic stays to a minimum. Both walking on shingles and high pressure loosen granules on their own, particularly on a hot day when the asphalt is soft, so the method keeps the pressure low and the foot traffic down.

It works on the parts you cannot see. The solution runs where water runs, which means it reaches shaded valleys and the north slope you cannot see from the driveway.

The trade off is honest: soft washing is slower, and it uses chemistry rather than force, which means the surrounding landscaping has to be planned around. Beds get soaked before the work starts and rinsed as it goes. On a Prospect property backing onto the golf course at Hunting Creek, or a Sutherland home near the fountain lakes, that planning is most of the job.

How to tell what you are actually looking at

A few quick checks before you call anyone:

Black streaks running vertically down the slope, worst on the shaded side. That is Gloeocapsa magma. Standard algae.

Green, spongy, three dimensional growth, usually in valleys or along the lower courses. That is moss. It needs treatment and it needs attention sooner, because it lifts shingle edges.

Crusty, flat, greenish gray patches that look painted on. Lichen. It is the most stubborn of the three and it bonds hard to the granule surface.

A black film on everything, not just the roof. If you are in or near Bardstown, this may not be roof algae at all. Whiskey fungus, Baudoinia compniacensis, feeds on the ethanol vapor that comes off bourbon aging warehouses, can carry around a mile and a half, and coats siding, fences, concrete, furniture and trees alike. If your car and your patio table are black as well as your roof, that is the more likely explanation.

What to ask a contractor

Three questions sort the field quickly:

  1. Will you be pressure washing or soft washing my roof? If the answer is pressure washing, or if they do not distinguish, stop there.
  2. Will anyone be walking on the roof? The less foot traffic, the better.
  3. What happens to my landscaping? A real answer involves pre-wetting and rinsing. No answer at all is the warning.

You should also expect a price before the work starts rather than after. Roof cleaning in this area generally runs a few hundred dollars for a typical single story home, and any reputable outfit can give you a real number once they know the size and layout of your property.

The short version

The streaks are algae, they are feeding on the limestone filler in your shingles, and they grow where the roof stays damp. Pressure washing removes them along with the granules that protect the roof. Soft washing kills the organism at low pressure and keeps the granules where they belong.

A clean roof does not add years to a shingle. It stops a perfectly good roof from being written off by everyone who looks at it.
